AESOP YOHO, YUEN LONG (HK)

Type: Retail

The design of Aesop Yoho Mall draws inspiration from the forms and rhythms of Mahjong, a game developed in the 1800s and a profound cultural emblem of Hong Kong's vibrant milieu. Reflecting the evolution of Mahjong tiles from bone and bamboo to acrylic resin, the store is envisioned as a composition of stacked forms in resin, bronze and bamboo.

A palette of Mahjong green shapes the compact space. Softly illuminated semi-translucent resin shelves create a dynamic play of light and shadow, while a central bronze basin, encircling a column, invites visitors to engage in a shared ritual of handwashing.

Resin slabs inset into platforms and counters recall the tactile solidity of Mahjong tiles. Local artisan Ho Sau Mei, who has been handcrafting tiles since 1962 and is one of the few craftspeople in Hong Kong who continues to do this manually, carved a bespoke inscription 春夏秋冬 (Spring, Summer, Autumn, Winter) into the resin, forging a tactile link to the cultural heritage that grounds the design. Bamboo flooring adds warmth and subtly nods to the tiles' original materiality.
